Michael Carrick hailed Manchester United‘s attitude after they left it late on Saturday against Bolton Wanderers and had to dig deep for three points.

Old Trafford was a little more nervy than normal after Jonny Evans saw red for a horror challenge on Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden, but an 88th minute goal from Dimitar Berbatov handed all three points to the league leaders.

Berbatov’s late goal once again demonstrated Manchester United’s ability to drag points from the difficult situations and midfielder Michael Carrick believes it is a matter of patience.

“Going into the last five minutes you keep telling each other to be patient and that a chance will come. Then it is about putting it away,” Carrick told reporters.

“You have to keep believing and trusting each other.”

Carrick also revealed that while he is not delighted at playing in defence, he will do so if asked to do so.

“It is not ideal playing centre-back but I have no problems with it if that is what’s required.”

However, Carrick is not complaining that so much is riding on all of United’s upcoming matches: “At the start of the season we set out to try and ensure every game would be big at this stage.

“We wanted to be involved in all the competitions and we have achieved that, which shows we are doing something right.”

United now sit 5 points clear at the top of the Premier League, but Arsenal have a game in hand.
