Brooding over these developments, we cannot resist posing questions as to whether the constitutionally-given oversight responsibility of the National Media Commission (NMC) over state media establishments is not being undermined by players in the corridors of power, as it were, in the most obscene manner.
For such players, their perceived partisan end justifies the means they are adopting in a matter, the far-reaching effects or impact of which cannot be over-looked. If we are to make meaning strides in our democracy, the nation must not countenance such a warped and sickening approach to national issues.
That things are falling apart at GBC is not in doubt and pretending that this is contrary to the reality by public-paid propagandists is only playing the ostrich and an attempt at throwing dust into the eyes of Ghanaians.
No wonder the state broadcaster, overwhelmed by political scheming and unwarranted interference, is being pushed to the corner by sound business-driven competitors in the industry.
The anomalies did not start yesterday but the termination of the appointment of the embattled Director General (DG), Ampem-Darko, under unacceptable circumstances, as aforementioned, suggests a peaking of the degeneration.
The timing of the termination of the appointment of Mr Ampem-Darko, the DG, and the last-minute dismissal of the NMC-member chairman of the committee empanelled to look into matters relating to the DG’s stewardship prompt many questions about the integrity of the state-triggered action.
Mr. Ampem-Darko is not a man with an excellent PR up his sleeves but that notwithstanding, the gentleman has contributed his widow’s mite towards the development of the state broadcaster, moving it a little away from the financial quagmire it had hitherto been stuck in.
But for those who are not prejudiced by his peculiar frailties and would put his management record on the table, this is a man who should not be hanged the way some politicians are seeking to do, if they have not done that already.
The dismissal of the Chairman of the committee probing the Director-General, even before his submission of a report on his findings, cannot be said to conform to normal and wise management procedure.
It is absolutely mind-boggling that the NMC, the body in charge of appointing and firing heads of state media agencies, which would have depended upon the report of its own set-up committee, went ahead to terminate the appointment of the DG, Mr Ampem-Darko, without the benefit of the report at all.
It is nothing but a matter of desperation on the part of those who instigated what happened, because as we have deduced, an Ampem-Darko-favourable report was in the offing.
The glimmering light at the end of the dark tunnel had to be put off by the long hands of politicians before the man they love to hate laughs last. Collectively, the NMC had let itself and unfortunately the citizenry, down. Still Ghana has too many rivers to cross towards democracy, justice and equity.
