Manchester United players look set for a pay freeze, with the club’s owners, the Glazers, considering the  introduction of more incentive-based salary, according to reports.

According to The Sun, The American owners are keen to avoid big money contracts to player such as Owen Hargreaves, who receives £80,000 a week, despite not having played in almost two years.

Under the revamped structure, players would receive bonuses for number of appearances and honours won, with some suggestions that the pay could even be based on minutes played.

Yet the scheme would have wider ramifications for the club, with it likely to hamper their ability to attract a higher pedigree of player and also creating issues when manager Alex Ferguson rests players and rotates his squad.

The Glazers have already come under fire for their management of contracts at American football team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where they have been accused of offering bonuses for unrealistic targets.
