Mt. Laverna Girls beat former Nairobi hockey champions St. George’s to put one foot in the semi-finals of the Nairobi Secondary Schools hockey tournament. Their 1-0 win on Tuesday evening increased their chances of making it to the knock-out stage, alongside Parklands Arya with two matches to play. Parklands beat Moi Girls 1-0 to keep their semi-final hopes high. The Laverna match started on a high with both team showing their intentions early. But as the match progressed, St. George’s cracked as Laverna capitalised on defensive blunders with their key striker Charity Kirui terrorising the losers before scoring the winning goal. “We are looking beyond provincials and our target ids actually the nationals,” forward Georgina Lumumba said after the match. Laverna are now second in their pool with 14 points behind Parklands, who have 15 points. Hillcrest and Pangani have already qualified from Pool “B”. Laverna’s captain Samantha Uriri said: “Hillcrest and Pangani are their two key competitors in the tournament but they will do their best to get past them.”
