Lagos Central Senatorial candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu has pleaded with striking doctors to return to work in the peoples’ interest.

Mrs.  Tinubu  made  the plea yesterday during the flag off of the free health mission at Apapa Local Government.

No fewer than 15,000 people have benefited from the scheme.

Addressing the crowd that turned out for treatment at Incar Motors, Ojora, Mrs. Tinubu lamented the impact  of the strike on the suffering masses, especially women and children.

She said: “I am making this appeal because I am a mother and the striking doctors should remember that the nature of their profession is that of humanitarianism which requires them to carry out their work with passion.

“The dimension which the agitation is assuming seems to have gone beyond money; I implore them to please in the interest of the masses return to work.”

She assured the people that government was on top of the situation and would ensure that the crisis is resolved.

In his address, Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) reiterated the government’s commitment to respond to the needs and yearnings of the masses.

The governor,  represented  by his running mate, Mrs Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire, said the health mission was geared towards cushioning the effect of the strike.

“We will continue to use this health mission to bridge the gap in the health services as a result of the ongoing strike, adding that the government would continue to add value to the lives of the people through meaningful  programmes and projects.

She enjoined the people to vote for the right candidates, saying by doing so, Lagos State will continue to grow.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, said 40 surgeries were carried out; 15,000 patients have been  treated since Monday when the mission began.

He added that patients were screened and treated for diabetes, eye diseases, dental problems, hypertension, hernia among others.

Some of the patients were given eye glasses, he said.
