Everton couldn’t quite claim their third league win in a row on Wednesday night as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Birmingham City, with manager David Moyes citing a lack of creativity the reason his side couldn’t claim all three points.

The visitors took the lead in the 17th minute through Chile international Jean Beausejour, but he hosts hit back 20 minutes later as Jonny Heitinga placed a shot into the top corner which gave Ben Foster no chance.

Despite dominating the rest of the match Everton could not score, with Louis Saha and Jermaine Beckford both squandering decent opportunities.

Talking to Everton’s official website, Moyes said: “When it has come to us to make the moment count, we haven’t been able to produce.”

Despite the draw, the Toffees’ form has improved of late, having picked up seven points from a possible nine in the last three league games, but the Scot isn’t getting carried away.

He said: “The players have dug deep and got some good results. We’re disappointed tonight that we couldn’t take full advantage and get a home win but we have picked up some good points recently so we’ve just got to try and keep going.

“I think we’re in that position where we’re in the middle. I think if we had won tonight we could have started to get a bit closer to the ones up the top.

“I don’t know what points it’s going to take to stay in the league but we’re certainly beginning to get away from that end.”

Although Moyes believes the Toffees are in a more stable position, he isn’t concerned about catching up with fierce rivals Liverpool, who are just five points ahead.

He added: “What we’ve got to do is win our next game and see what happens, that’s the important thing.”

One sour note for the Toffees, though, was an injury to influential midfielder Mikel Arteta who pulled up with a hamstring problem early on.

Moyes said: “I couldn’t tell you yet the extent of the injury. I just saw what you saw. I haven’t had a chance to speak to the medical team yet.

“He played very well on Saturday against Newcastle and he was beginning to show signs of coming back so to lose him so early in the game was a big blow.”
