Everton boss David Moyes was left to rue Mikel Arteta’s injury after being held at home by Birmingham.

Arteta, who was made captain for the night, limped off early on during the 1-1 draw at Goodison Park with a hamstring injury.

Everton missed the Spaniard’s creative influence as they struggled to breakdown a stubborn Birmingham defence and Arteta is likely to face several weeks on the sidelines.

    Setback

“It was a setback to lose Arteta and you could sense it was a setback for the crowd as well as we needed Mikel to be creative for us,” said Moyes.

“I couldn’t tell you how bad the injury is as I have not had a chance to speak to the medical team yet.

“He played very well on Saturday and to lose him so early on was a major blow.”

Moyes was happy with his side’s second half performance, but conceded that they lacked the creative spark to find a second goal.

“We played better in the second half than in the first half, but we just didn’t have the quality to turn some of the good play into goals,” added Moyes.

“The players dug deep and we are disappointed we couldn’t take full advantage and the get the home win, but we have picked some good points in the last few games.”
