Wolves boss Mick McCarthy believes Michael Kightly could be fit enough to make his long-awaited return in the Midlands derby against Aston Villa next Saturday.

Injuries have meant the winger has not turned out for Wolves’ first team since November 2009.

But the 25-year-old, who underwent surgery on his patella tendons late last year, is closing on a return after scoring for the reserves at Blackburn on Monday.

Wolves boss McCarthy believes Kightly could now be in line to face Aston Villa on 19th March.

He told the club’s official website: “Kightly is flying – he played really well the other night.

    No problem

“I don’t see any problem with him being available to play against Villa.

“I think he’ll be very close to being available for the squad, I’m not saying he will start because that would be a big ask but he could be involved.

“And if not Villa then certainly the next game (away at Newcastle on 2nd April).

“It’s unlikely we’ll send him out on loan – there was that thought, but if he’s fit to play in someone else’s team, he’ll be fit to play as a sub and be a part of our team, so I’d like him here.

“He’ll get the games and the football he needs in the reserves here or whatever.”

McCarthy has also received another major boost for the relegation fight ahead with the return to training of Adlene Guedioura, who broke his leg in Wolves’ last game with Villa at Molineux back in September.

    Looking good

The Wolves boss added: “Adlene trained fully today Wednesday with us and he’s fine – he’s looking good.

“He trained with the kids all last week and joined us this week. He trained with (assistant manager) Terry Connor yesterday and he trained with me today.

“It’s a massive boost because potentially, if you take out the next two games and with the breaks we’ve got now, he might be available for seven games.

“That’s providing he doesn’t have any further problems.”

In further injury news, Ronald Zubar has returned home to his specialist in France for an injection to improve his injured back and McCarthy hopes he may be available for the Villa game, while Stephen Hunt is battling to be fit with an ongoing calf problem.

Fellow defender Michael Mancienne may return to training with the club next week, but midfielder Dave Edwards is set to be on the sidelines for a month with a back injury.
