Mike Oquaye, one of the youngest parliamentary aspirants in the forthcoming primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says he is an independent man who is ready to vie for the Dome/Kwabenya seat without his father’s support.

Speaking to Daily Guide soon after picking nomination forms last week he said, “I am an individual achiever and on my own merit I have served as polling station agent for the party on two occasions, among many other tasks.”

He also mentioned that he held an executive position at the regional level for the NPP and represented the party in court. “These are critical roles which cannot be quantified in terms of value,” he pointed out. “When I appear on radio I do not go there with my father.”

According to him, “If the parliamentary position was a dynasty I would not have gone for nomination forms and face the delegates. I would have just continued in the position. I hold a party card and pay my dues as a member.”

These qualities, he said, qualifies him to vie for any position in the party. Lawyer Mike Oquaye’s father, Prof Mike Oquaye has dispelled the notion of a dynasty, explaining that it is all about merit. He stated vehemently that the decision as to who succeeds him will purely be taken by the delegates in the constituency and if the constituency decides to elect his son, it will be entirely up to them.

He dismissed assertions about bad timing, insisting that ability and competence should be an overriding principle for an election.

Meanwhile the East Ayawaso Constituency, Alhaji Yusif Ahmed Fofana of Mamobi has also picked nomination forms to vie for the seat on the ticket of the NPP.

In an interview with Daily Guide, Mr. Ahmed Fofana indicated that his enormous contribution to politics over the years places him in a good position to win the primaries, which is slated for April 30.

He said that he will win the seat for the NPP for the first time due to his rich political experience, adding, “With this experience, I am well positioned to articulate and champion the aspirations of the people in Parliament.’’ “I have always had the passion to serve my community and proceeding to Parliament will give me the opportunity to help the other parliamentarians make good laws for the country and improve the living standards of the people,” he added.

Michael Omari Wadie has also picked nomination forms to contest for the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat in the Greater Accra region due to the fact that the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Akosua Frema Osei Opare is not seeking re-election.
