The 26-year-old played five games with the lower league Whitecaps last year, making the move from Europe in August, and has spent preseason with the expansion club preparing for the 2011 season.
“We’re delighted to add Davide to our MLS squad,” said Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi. “He brings a special skill set and quality that has the ability to change matches. As an attacking midfielder or a withdrawn striker, Davide is the type of player that will excite fans with his creativity on the ball. We’re delighted to have him as part of our inaugural MLS squad.”
Chiumiento developed at Juventus, where he made his first team debut at 19. Following loans in Italy, France, and Switzerland, Chiumiento signed with FC Luzern. In three years there, the Swiss international scored 17 goals and added 16 assists.
