Liverpool striker Luis Suarez insists that he understands the rivalry between his team and Manchester United, and is desperate to stop them winning the title.

The £22.8million striker, who moved to Anfield from Ajax on transfer deadline day in January, is set to lead the line against their bitter North West adversaries in their showdown at Anfield on Sunday lunchtime.

The Uruguay international has started his career in impressive fashion, scoring on his debut against Stoke and grabbing an assist in their 3-1 defeat at West Ham on Sunday.

Suarez propelled his name into the spotlight at the World Cup, where, alongside former United striker Diego Forlan, he helped guide the team to the semi-finals.

Forlan notoriously scored two goals in the space of three minutes in 2002 to help United beat Liverpool at Anfield, and despite failing to find anywhere near the form at Old Trafford he discovered in his subsequent move to Spain, it has not been forgotten by the Red Devils fans.

“(Forlan) told me that (this) is the most important game of the year for (United) as it is for us,” Suarez said.

“I know that of all the games in the season this is the one that both most want to win.
    Power

“That the United fans still sing that about Diego shows the power of the fixture. It shows it is a very important game.

“I have played a lot of big derbies in Holland, Uruguay and for the national team against Argentina and Brazil, so I am calm. I am used to playing derbies.

“The team is in a good place at the moment. I am confident the team will know how to play this game.”

Suarez could finally be given the chance to start alongside fellow striker and record signing Andy Carroll, who made his £35million move to Anfield on the same day as a replacement for Chelsea-bound Fernando Torres.

The 23-year-old is excited about the prospect of partnering the towering centre forward, who, despite playing just six months of regular top-flight football, gave defenders nightmares and scored 11 goals before succumbing to injury in December.

“He is very tall, he is very good in the air and he has great feet. But you have to remember that defenders here are also very tall, they are also very good in the air,” he added.

“That is why the duels between the two are very good to watch. I still don’t know how they would cope with him, though.”

“It is important for us that neither (Nemanja) Vidic nor (Rio) Ferdinand will be there, but any player who is at United is there for a reason.

    Important

“We know this game is important not just for three points but because we have to stop United winning the title, because of the rivalry between the two teams and because we currently have the same amount of titles.

“I know it would be a prize for us to stop them winning the league.”

Suarez became infamous last summer for his handball off the line in the last minute of extra time in the World Cup quarter-final against Ghana to concede a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan missed and Uruguay went on to win on penalties.

Also now notorious for his ‘biting’ incident of PSV Eindhoven’s Otmar Bakkal last December, Suarez was eager to become known for his talents with his feet, rather than his hands or mouth.

“It would be great if people in this country had a positive image of me as a striker and as a player,” he said.

“It would be much better for them to think of me scoring goals and playing well, rather than just for the handball in the World Cup. I’d love to change that impression of me.”
