Dean Richards has been fondly remembered as a “gentle giant” by his former Wolverhampton Wanderers team-mate Steve Bull.
The ex-Wolves, Southampton and Tottenham man was buried today in Bradford after losing his battle with a long-term illness at the age of just 36.
Bull was in the latter stages of his career at Molineux when Richards joined the club in 1995. The defender was popular with fans during his four years at the club.
Writing in his regular column for Sportingbet as featured on Goal.com ‘Bully’ hailed Richards as a “great professional and great bloke.”
“It was sad to hear about the passing of Dean Richards last week,” he said. “I knew him quite well and would consider him a friend of mine, although we lost contact once he went to Spurs.Â
“I remember him as a gentle giant. He was a bit like me in the changing room as he could be very quiet, but once he got out on the field he made himself known. He was a great professional and a great bloke.”
Bull added: “I moan and groan like anyone at times but when you see things like that in life, it makes you realise you have to get on with it. It certainly puts a relegation battle in perspective.”
Richards’ funeral took place in his native Bradford today and was attended by several former team-mates.
