The lack of transparency in public service and independent judicial systems have scared multinational corporations from investing in most African countries including Nigeria, former Ghanaian President John A. Kufuor, has said.

Kufour made the remarks yesterday during the 4th annual forum of laureates of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) tagged: ‘Employment Generation and Attitudinal Change as Indispensable Tools for Good Governance and Rapid National Development’ in Abuja.

He said Nigeria, with its vast natural resource, has the potential of attracting elite investors but noted that “Investors will only come to where the environment for doing business is transparent, where laws are clearly spelt out and obeyed.”

Kufuor said bureaucratic impediments toward accessing credit were tackled in Ghana to make it easy for businesses and farmers to obtain credit.

“Our target was to achieve a teacher to pupil ratio of 1:35 and the raising of the teaching profession to a respectable position to attract and retain more professionals,” he said.

Chairman of the Nigerian National Merit Award, Professor Sylvester Adegoke, said the essence of the lecture was to provide a platform for awardees of NNOM to meet and exchange ideas on some salient and burning national issues and offer solutions.
