Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has warned Chelsea that their latest signings may not create the kind of an impact expected of them this season.

The Blues were leading the Premier League early on in the campaign, but endured a slump that now sees them battling for a Champions League place.

And the decision to bring in British transfer record signing Fernando Torres from Liverpool is yet to yield results, as the Spaniard has not scored a single goal for his new employers, while David Luiz has shown flashes of what he could be capable of in the future.

“The Torres deal did make me think, ‘wow, they’ve really gone for it’,” Ferdinand said, according to The Express.

“But will those transfers really improve Chelsea this season? I don’t know. Next season, I would say, ‘yes, they will’. But it is hard to settle in quickly in January.”

Manchester United lock horns with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
