John O’Shea insists Manchester United can cope with the pressure surrounding their clash with Chelsea on Tuesday and he is confident they have what it takes to remain at the top of the league until the end of the season.

The Irish defender’s comments come after Chelsea captain John Terry claimed the pressure would be further on United were they to lose at Stamford Bridge, but O’Shea said he felt United’s experience would be the key.

“Obviously John Terry has to keep the season alive – and we still have to play them twice,” he told Sky Sports.

“We have the experience but we have to show it on the pitch, it’s pure and simple.”

“It is definitely a case that the result is everything, especially when it comes to big weeks like this.”

United are currently four points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League and are 15 points clear of Chelsea who currently sit in fifth place in the table, and O’Shea knows Tuesday’s game is all about the result and not the performance.

“Not many people are going to remember how well we played if we win,” he continued.

“We are on top of the league at the minute and hopefully we can keep the cushion ahead of other teams.

“That obviously means not losing games, and going to places like Stamford Bridge and getting results.”

Stamford Bridge has not been a happy hunting ground for United in recent years, they have not won there since 2002, but O’Shea insists they are confident on turning their form around.

“We haven’t had the most favourable of results down there recently,” he added.

“But we are looking forward to the challenge of trying to put that right.”
