Veep Condemns Xenophobic Attacks In Libya

Vice President, John Dramani Mahama has described as unfortunate, xenophobic attacks on mainly black Africans in Libya. Anti-government protests in Libya have in the last one week intensified, with bloody attacks on foreign nationals around the country.

It followed reports that Colonel Muammar Gadaffi has brought in mercenaries from sub-Saharan Africa in his bid to put down the raging revolt against his 42 year old regime.

Speaking to Journalists over the weekend, Vice President Mahama emphasised that the Mills administration is working tirelessly to ensure that all Ghanaians trapped in the unrest in Libya are brought back home safely.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister, Hon Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni is expected to appear before Parliament later this week to answer questions on governments plans to evacuate all stranded Ghanaians in Libya.

The New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Weija, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, who is also the Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, has filed an urgent question, asking that the Minister be summoned to tell the House what exactly the government was doing to get Ghanaians out of harm’s way in Libya.

She had earlier accused the administration of being too slow in responding to the numerous SOS messages from Ghanaians resident in Libya.

Speaking to Citi News, Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Alhaji Rashid rejected the criticisms, saying the view that the Mills administration does not care about Ghanaian lives is most unfortunate.

On Saturday February 26, the first batch of 55 Ghanaians arrived in Ghana as part of the government’s plan to evacuate the over 10,000 Ghanaians in the Libya.
