The England international is facing potential punishment for his part in an incident involving Wigan’s James McCarthy in Manchester United’s 4-0 victory at the DW Stadium on Saturday, according to The Daily Mail.

TV replays showed the striker raise an elbow to the Wigan midfielder, and while Rooney went unpunished by referee Mark Clattenburg during the game, the newspaper reports the FA are set to quiz the match official regarding the incident on Monday.

If Clattenburg tells the FA he did not see Rooney strike McCarthy, the forward could be punished retrospectively and ruled out of Tuesday night’s clash with the reigning Premier League champions.

However, if Rooney is banned, he could appeal the decision, thus delaying his potential suspension until the Premier League leaders meet Liverpool next Sunday.
