The NDC Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon Constituency and Deputy Minister for Fisheries, Nii Amasah Namoale, has slammed the New Patriotic Party for what he claims to be attempts by the opposition party to rub off some of the cocaine label they have been tagged with on the ruling party.

According to him, the NPP can produce all the statisticians and documents to justify that trading in narcotics is also pervasive in the NDC, but it will not change the fact that during their tenure, cocaine was rife and it was a thriving business venture.

His comments comes in the wake of interesting scenes in Parliament on Friday when MPs haggled over which of the two administrations- NDC or the NPP – was or is endemic with cocaine related activities.

The House was debating President John Mills’ Third State of the Nation’s Address, a portion of which the president vowed to re-open investigations into the infamous MV-Benjamin cocaine case in which 77 parcels of cocaine went missing on Ghanaian waters.

Some impassioned was the debate that when NDC MPs cited a litany of cocaine related activities under the Kufuor regime to buttress their case, Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, produced a Ghanaian Times report of September 20, 2008 which stated “Drug Barons now Scared of Ghana” to portray the work the Kufuor Government had done in the fight against drugs.

But speaking on e-TV’s Breakfast TV Newspaper Review, Nii Namoale rubbished off these assertions by the opposition party claiming the NPP government was sympathetic to drug offenders especially cocaine dealers, and was categorical that there is enough evidence to back up that claim.

He added that it is well documented that during the NPP era cocaine which had been confiscated turned into konkonte (grounded cassava) and also cited the disappearance of cocaine exhibits from the Police headquarters as a classic example of how the Kufuor administration lacked the political will to fight the drug-menace.

“We were all here when cocaine turned into konkonte, 77 parcels of cocaine got lost and assets that had been confiscated under the charges of cocaine given back to their owners. There are people who can present facts to the court and the court will accept that fact but it may not be the truth. The truth is that during the era of a certain regime, there was cocaine here, cocaine there and cocaine everywhere so the NPP can bring all the statistics but the facts of the matter is that there was cocaine everywhere during their era,” he stated.

He also added that it was under the NPP era that an MP was able to smuggle drugs (heroine) out of Ghana and was busted in the USA.

According to him, the Kufuor administration even went to the extent of releasing some convicted drug barons, adding that the NPP should not be taken at their word because they are best in churning propaganda even though they always claim they do not have a Propaganda Secretary.

“…if you take an NPP (member) at his word thinking they are honorable, you will laugh at the wrong side of your mouth,” the La-Dadekotopon Constituency MP said.
