The intended clash, which was unsuccessful, was sparked by the fact that MCE Victor Herman Condobrey’s faction clamped the constituency’s Nissan pick-up being driven by the chairman, Wonder Boasilenu.
Mr Boasilenu, who had gone to the Hohoe branch of the Agricultural Development Bank to transact business, was confused after returning to find the vehicle clamped with rectangular iron bars with sharp edges, preventing it from moving.
According to him, soon after he emerged from the bank, he saw four men jumping into a waiting cab with registration number AS 492 Y.
He said he recognized two of the occupants as one Rashid and Elorm Adzimah, all confidantes of the MCE.
The action angered the NDC chairman’s faction, fueling the intended “bloodbath” which was rapidly prevented by the Hohoe police.
Wilson Kudze, Hohoe District Police Commander, who confirmed the incident, said the police swiftly moved in to avert any untoward clashes.
He said the pick-up was recovered to the police with smashed windscreen while investigations have been opened into the case.
A day after the incident, DAILY GUIDE spotted the pick-up in front of the Hohoe Police Station.
When contacted, the MCE, Victor Herman Condobrey said, “I have been directed not to speak to the media about the issue. It is a party issue and I will not talk about it.”
Yesterday’s incident comes in the wake of a recent division within the Hohoe North Constituency, giving birth to two factions, the MCE’s and the constituency chairman’s. This has also resulted in skirmishes, accusations and counter-accusations, thereby leading to calculated attempts by both factions to outdo each other.
One of such attempts includes press conferences held by both parties, requesting the dismissal of the MCE or constituency chairman.
Three days ago, the faction believed to be in favour of the MCE, lead by the executives of the Hohoe-North and Hohoe-South constituencies of the party, organized a demonstration and press conference and declared their unflinching support and overwhelming endorsement of the administration and leadership style of Victor-Hermann Condobrey.
Their statement was signed by Joseph Kahia and Michael Ellis Adzimah, chairman of Hohoe South and secretary of Hohoe North constituencies respectively and read by Godfred Agbeke, secretary of Hohoe South. It urged the party hierarchy at the national level to ‘crack the whip’ to send a clear signal to rabble-rousers to conform.
The statement described as wicked, capricious and malicious the allegations in the media by a self-seeking ‘rebel’ group within the Hohoe-North NDC, led by its chairman, Wonder Boasilenu, to persistently cause disaffection for the MCE and remove him from office.
It stated that the action of the ‘rebel’ group was not only a disgrace but amounted to a blatant abuse of the values of the party’s conscience, virtues, rules and philosophy and a show of arrogance and insatiable greed.
The press conference, believed to be financed by Mr. Condobrey, was in reaction to another one organized last Wednesday by a group calling itself ‘Concerned Youth’ of the Hohoe-North constituency. They asked President Mills to remove Mr. Condobrey from office.
In the statement issued at the conference, Mr Condobrey was accused of being addicted to “kickbacks,” which the group described as being an affront to President Mills’ resolve to fight corruption.
It also alleged that most transactions under the MCE’s watch were fraught with malfeasance and misappropriation, with the most trivial being the diversion of relief items for personal benefits.
The statement described his action to join the fray of buyers of encroached land belonging to the Saint Francis College of Education as unfortunate, saying he was motivated by his inordinate quest to acquire wealth and property.
It alleged that Mr Condobrey’s continuous stay in office would provide arsenals for their political opponents and again reduce the billing of the party in the run-up to the 2012 general elections.
It said Mr Condobrey’s divide and rule tactics had brought discord and cracks in different levels of the party’s structures including constituency executives, branch executives and Zongo communities.
“We need somebody who would unite party members, its structures, placing the constituency on the right pedestal to actualize the Better Ghana Agenda and not somebody only interested in short-circuiting the gains of the area to himself and cohorts,” it stated.
