Corriere dello Sport has reported that Daniele de Rossi is set to be suspended for Roma’s Champions League trip to Shakhtar Donetsk on March 8.

Roma currently trail the Ukrainians 3-2 from the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico and at the end of the game Sky Europe cameras caught De Rossi striking an opponent with a punch. Shakhtar have already brought the issue to the attention of UEFA and it would appear De Rossi will now be ruled out for the game in Donetsk.

UEFA have opened discussions concerning the Giallorossi midfielder’s fate with the likely outcome being a three-match suspension. That would rule the vice-captain out of the second leg, adding to the one-match disciplinary absences of Jeremy Menez and Marco Cassetti.

De Rossi could claim that the attack was a result of provocation and receive a decreased suspension as a result, but that is unlikely to save him from missing the clash at the Donbass Arena.
