ORDINARY voters are joining journalists for an election debate between NSW Premier Kristina Keneally and Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell in Sydney.

The Fate of Our State debate will see the leaders on the receiving end of questions posed by four Fairfax Media journalists and a reporter from Channel 10.

Kicking off at 12pm (AEDT) today, they will also be quizzed by members of a studio audience.

The debate will go live on Network Ten and also be webcast on smh.com.au.

Ten news presenter Sandra Sully will moderate the debate.

The debate comes after a Newspoll showed just 30 per cent of respondents are satisfied with Ms Keneally’s performance, while 57 per cent are dissatisfied, making a negative of 27 per cent.

Support for her party is also in the doldrums at a miserable 23 per cent, half the Coalition’s level.

The Newspoll was conducted over January and February and reflects the public fallout from the Government’s sale of state electricity assets.

Yesterday a NSW upper house committee report called on the $5.3 billion transaction to be cancelled.

It also condemned the premier for proroguing parliament in December ahead of the upper house inquiry.

Her action was widely viewed as an attempt to shut down the inquiry because it exposed energy company witnesses to the risk of being sued.

Today Ms Keneally will attend a Sydney prayer service for people effected by the earthquake in Christchurch.

Led by Archbishop of Sydney Dr Peter Jensen, the service will be held at St Andrews Cathedral at 3pm (AEDT).
