Whilst some of the fishing communities in the Central Region are kicking against the law, describing it as harsh and a disincentive to their businesses, others in the same region are satisfied with the new law prohibiting the use of lights for fishing.
The first group to kick against the law was the Inshore Boat Owners Association (IBOA), operators of semi-industrial vessels in the country. The group claimed it was uncomfortable with the new law, since it was unfavourable for their fishing business, rendering their activity vulnerable to all manner of difficulties.
The group cited the use of lights during fishing expeditions, as one of the best protective methods to save them from uncertainties on the high seas, as well as the dangers of oncoming huge boats and vessels.
The group embarked on a campaign to draw the attention of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, through the Fisheries Department, to consider reviewing the law, since it was inimical to their business growth.
Whilst the prevailing circumstance compelled some of the fishermen to press home their demand by embarking on a demonstration, their action was met with a counter-demonstration by those who are in favour of the law.
They believe the ban on lights for fishing was appropriate, timely, and could enhance their fishing business, and not ruin it, as being alleged by opposers of the ban.
However, Colonel M’bawine Atintande, Director of Public Relations at the Ghana Armed Forces has revealed on Joy evening news that the Navy has intensified their patrolling on the waters and had arrested some canoes and trawlers.
He stated that they had handed over the canoes to the Ghana police and adding that some the culprits were even on trial. He expressed gratitude to some of the fishermen who were agitating for the ban of light fishing and urged them to readily pass information to the Ghana Navy and other collaborative agencies.
