Calls for Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2012 elections, have been given a major boast by some NDC women in the Ashanti Region.
A Kumasi based group by name “Zongo Women for Nana Konadu for 2012” is the latest to rally support for Mrs. Rawlings. The group is embarking on a campaign to project Mrs. Rawlings as the best option for her NDC’s presidential candidate slot.
Though the NDC has not opened nominations for its flagbearer aspirants, it has become clear that for close to a year, supporters of Nana Konadu have been campaigning for her to become the party’s flagbearer.
In an interview with Citi News, Mrs. Adiza Abubakar, spokesperson for the “Zongo Women for Nana Konadu for 2012” explained that their preference for Mrs. Rawlings does not mean that Prof. Mills was not doing well, but because of their firm belief that realistic, the former first lady was the best candidate to retain the NDC in power.
She dismissed the perception that Zongos would not vote for a woman as President, stressing even “if a Muslim-dominated country like Pakistan could elect a woman as a Prime minister, why can’t Ghanaians do same?” she rhetorically asked.
Hadiza Abubakar also called on “former President and founder of the NDC, J.J Rawlings not to stand in the way of the former first lady in her bid to contest the NDC presidential primaries.”
To them, such an action will amount to violating her (Mrs Rawlings’) right to take part in the country’s democratic dispensation.
