Three persons who used illegal means in registering vehicles which are smuggled into the country mainly from the Republic of Togo have been arrested in Accra.
The three, Bright Agyei, John Amoah and Kwabena Amoako, were arrested on Tuesday February 8, 2011 by officials from the National Security and handed over to the Vetting and Crime Analysis (VCA) Unit at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further investigations.
The three acted as DVLA agents popularly known as Goro boys and issued fake licences to drivers as well as forged road worthy certificates and fake vehicle registration numbers.
The Director of VCA, Denis Abade told DAILY GUIDE that on February 8, 2011, a team of security officers were dispatched to track the activities of the three.
Upon reaching a pub near the DVLA offices, Bright Adjei who acted as an official of the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) was seen processing some DVLA forms.
He was arrested immediately and a spot search on him revealed several documents purported to have been issued by CEPS including CEPS declaration forms, CEPS stamps, DVLA stamps, as well as assorted documents from DVLA with names, photos and other details of clients.
While the officers were yet to leave, John Amoah arrived with more documents which he gave to Adjei.Amoah was also arrested and he disclosed that the said documents were given to him by Kwabena Amoako.
The three in their caution statement admitted the offence. They have since been put before an Accra Circuit Court with charges of forgery preferred against them.
