The Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Malik Kwaku Baako says it will be a thoughtless decision on the part of former first Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings to contest in the NDC’s presidential primary.
He said that considering the political chemistry within the NDC, it will be almost impossible for Mrs. Rawlings to dislodge Professor Mills, who happens to be the current president.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Kwaku Baako said Nana Konadu would lose hands down, considering the balance of forces and the political chemistry within the party. According to him, it will be suicidal in the highest order for Mrs. Rawlings to compete against President Mills because she will be humiliated. “It is kind of speculation and she has not come out to confirm but this is not a thoughtful decision because she will loose.
If we do a calculation of the balance of forces and the political chemistry within the party, it will be almost impossible for Mrs. Rawlings to dislodge the incumbent, who happens to be the current President. However pervasive the Rawlings influence is, when it comes to the delegate’s platform it will have a restrictive impact,” he asserted. According to him, it is commonsensical that the incumbent will have a huge advantage because he makes all the appointments, hence will have the support of majority of the party leadership. He noted that if the NDC decides to go to election with a different candidate, it would have negative consequences on the party.
“This can have critical and negative consequences for their ticket. Even though I don’t think they will win the next election, the NDC are safe and better poised for a more competitive involvement with the Mills ticket than any other,” he warned.
He asserted that there are indications that Mr. Rawlings’ campaign against the Mills administration was a form of softening the grounds for his wife. He, however, quickly added that given the opportunity, he would have advised Nana Konadu to suspend her presidential ambition for now.
