President Mills has assured the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of his full support in his fight to arrest and prosecute anybody who flouts the country’s laws, including those governing road usage, Koku Anyidoho, Communications Director at the Presidency, has told Citi FM.
On Tuesday, February 1 over 500 ‘Okada’ operators in Accra stormed Parliament to present a petition, seeking to convince Parliament to amend the law that disallows the use of motorbikes as a means of transport for commercial purposes.
According to the operators, the venture is fast becoming a viable source of employment among the youth hence the need for Government to legitimize their existence to save the many unemployed youth from engaging in nefarious activities.
A Nigerian Journalist in an interview with Citi News admonished Ghanaians not to heed to the call by the ‘Okada’ operators since the “bad venture” has more demerits than merits.
Speaking to the Host of the Citi Breakfast Show, Bernard Avle, on Wednesday February 2, Koku Anyidoho said President Mills will not stand in the way of the IGP in the discharge of his lawful, official duties.
“President Mills’ view is that the police must apply the laws and make sure that if people drive around without crash helmets, they are picked up and prosecuted; if they jump the red lights they must be picked up and prosecuted”.
“For now the President has given strict instructions to the IGP that the Police must apply the laws to the letter. The fact that people are creating employment for themselves does not mean that they must bend the laws”.
