A man was killed when a discarded mortar bomb exploded in his hands in Musina in Limpopo on Tuesday, police said.
Two men picked up the device in a field around noon and mistook it for scrap metal, Lieutenant-Colonel Ronel Otto said.
“One of them fiddled with the device and it exploded, killing him on the scene,” she said. The second man was not injured.
Otto said two other men tried to sell a number of mortar bombs to a scrap yard in Musina earlier in the day.
“But an employee at the scrap yard realised they were dangerous and declined to buy them.”
It appeared that the two then discarded the mortars, one of which was picked up later by the victim.
The origin of the bombs was being investigated, Otto said. – Sapa
