Angola: Ethiopians Top Luanda’s Yearend Race List

    Luanda — Ethiopian athletes are leading the honour standing of the yearend race dubbed “São Silvestre”, with 19 titles in male category and nine (women).

    The numbers tend to increase taking into account the participation of the Ethiopians Haile Gebrselassie and Dire Tune, the winners of the 2011 edition.

    The competition is scheduled for December 31, Saturday, at 05:00 pm in some Luanda streets.

    The participants will cover 10 km distance, starting from “Mutamba” square as far as”Coqueiros” Stadium.

    Ethiopia, in representation of Berhanu Guirma won the previous editions held in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982. In women, it started standing out in 1989 by Tigist Moreda, who also won the competition in 1991.

    Angola follows Ethiopia with 14 victories. The first was attributed to Isidro Louro in 1954, and the last in 2003 by José Ndala and Ana Isabel.

    Portugal, with five, South Africa, four, Zimbabwe three, Mozambique and the then Union Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR), two each.
