Fabio Coentrao of Real Madrid
Portuguese defender Fabio Coentrao says joining Real Madrid was the best decision for his career.
The 23-year-old joined the Whites on a six-year-deal ahead of the 2011/12 season from Portuguese side Benfica and he believes he’s finally playing for the best side in the world.
“Every player dreams of reaching the top and I am no exception. I am not belittling Benfica, who are a very good club, but Madrid are at a much higher level,” he told Record.
The Portuguese international who can play as a left fullback or left winger was wanted by a number of top European sides like Chelsea and Bayern Munich before he made his move to the Spanish capital.
“The truth is that I had other concrete offers, as you all know,” Coentrao said.
“Half of Europe was after me back then. But, as I also said, my desire was to stay at Benfica. Between all the clubs interested in me and Benfica, I always preferred to stay, but when Real made an offer everything changed.
“Joining Madrid was the right thing to do. I am realizing a dream, no doubt about it.”
