Two Ekurhuleni metro police officers who spent Christmas behind bars after being arrested for corruption were granted bail on Thursday in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court.
Patrick Shongwe, 38, cluster commander of the Ekurhuleni metro police department, was granted R15,000 bail and Rolsten Pillay bail of R12,000.
They were warned to appear again on March 20.
Shongwe allegedly threatened motorists with arrest, unlawfully impounded vehicles, extorted money from motorists, and confiscated goods from street vendors.
Pillay, who was arrested earlier in December following a tip-off, had approached authorities for a plea bargain deal, according to earlier reports.
The two were believed to be have been part of a syndicate. – Sapa
