Potential presidential candidate Mohamed El-Baradei criticized former prime minister Ahmed Shafik’s plans to run for president taking it as a sign that the “former regime is still alive”.

In a tweet, Baradei said, “When former prime minister of Mubarak who was overthrown by the revolution announces his intention to run for president of revolutionary Egypt, then the former regime is still alive.”

Shafik was Minister of Aviation under Mubarak and many consider him one of his close aides.

Mubarak appointed Shafik as prime minister after January’s uprising but Shafik resigned about a month later under popular pressures.

Shafik stated to Aswat Masriya last October his intention to run for president during the expected presidential elections in the first half of 2012.
