Train travellers were shocked to discover a 56-year-old mans head lying between the tracks under one of the carriages.

The motorist believed to be responsible for derailing a train in Isipingo and injuring 21 people has been arrested, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

“The 22-year-old man was arrested on Thursday evening,” Captain Thulani Zwane said.

He is facing charges of attempted murder and failing to comply with a traffic officer.

Durban metro police were conducting their duties along Mcwayizeni Road in Umlazi on Thursday when they tried to stop a speeding Volvo. The driver did not stop and a car chase ensued.

The driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle while going around a bend. His vehicle fell from a bridge and landed on the railway line.

The train could not stop in time and crashed into the car near Reunion Station in Isipingo.

The driver got out and ran away before the train hit the car.

He is expected to appear at the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. – Sapa
