Joleon Lescott has given his assessment on Manchester City‘s impressive start to the season, insisting that matching cross-town rivals Manchester United is now the club’s target to ensure the Premier League trophy heads to the Etihad Stadium.
Roberto Mancini’s side are top at Christmas for the first time since 1929 and have lost just one game in the league in a dominant opening few months of the season.
However, rivals United are just two points adrift, and Lescott insists keeping ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side is key to their chances.
“The main goal is to win every game, home and away, and match United’s results,” Lescott told The Mirror.
“We are scoring a lot of goals and winning games and we have an air of confidence about us. But that is controlled – you don’t want it to be too arrogant.
“The main thing is to keep it going, keep progressing and keep our feet on the ground.”
Last season’s third-place finish saw City concede the fewest goals across the league but a lack of goals occasionally hindered their chances of sustaining a challenge for the Premier League trophy
“Last season we got a lot of negative publicity because the goals weren’t flowing freely,” added Lescott.
“We were hard to break down but not scoring so many goals. This season we have a better balance.
“We have had the belief and confidence to score more goals and the strength and organisation to keep clean sheets.”

Mancini has echoed Lescott’s thoughts, stating the need to acquire 90 points this year if the club are to secure the title.
