The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said he is not perturbed by the constant vilification he has been subjected to by the “gutter press of the NDC”.
According to him, the character assassination and mudslinging by those media houses is no worry to him since it is “a small price to pay in order to achieve [my] objective. ”
Addressing a press soiree at his Nima residence on Thursday night, Nana Addo Dankwa congratulated the media for a good job done in the year 2011 and encouraged them to be more professional in 2012 – an election year.
“I want to use this occasion to congratulate you and to say more grease to your elbows to continue this way in the larger interest of our nation and our people.
“I say so even though I continue to be one of the most vilified people in certain sections of the press of our country, it doesn’t worry me, I think all of us have a price to pay, if it is a little price for me to pay to have the NDC gutter press to go on with their case I don’t worry about it,” he said.
Nana Addo also lauded the allocation of GHc1 million in the 2012 budget to set up a media fund.
He, however, stated that it is his hope that the money would be used for the development of the media rather than to be used to influence journalists in the country.
Touching on the controversial GhC42 million judgment debt, the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice lashed out at the Atta Mills-led government for dolling out such a huge amount of money to one person while according to him, Ghanaians continue to wallow in abject poverty.
He has, however, endorsed calls for a public inquiry into the matter adding that officials in various positions should be responsible in their judgment.
