Goal : Brighton boss Gus Poyet has spoken of his surprise at the extent of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez’s punishment, after the 24-year-old was handed an eight-game suspension for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.
Poyet believes that the difference in cultures between Uruguay and England is to blame for the incident, suggesting that ignorance and not malice was the reason behind Suarez’s comments
As well as making the case in favour of the former Ajax forward, he also commented on the “controversial” nature of Evra, claiming the Frenchman is “no saint”.
Poyet told Uruguayan newspaper Ultimas Noticias: “The ban is incredible, shocking, it’s disproportionate. I back Luis to death.
“Things have happened before with Evra. He is not a saint. He is a controversial player.
“I don’t know in which world we are going to live in from now on people. People will accuse each other of anything.
