Kenny Dalglish is confident that Liverpool can up their game to finish in the top four and secure Champions League football.

The Reds have not competed alongside Europe’s elite clubs for two years and failed to qualify for any continental competition last season.

The Scot admitted that his side face a difficult task in ensuring their place in Europe’s biggest club competition this season, but expressed confidence they can improve sufficiently to challenge.

“The teams that are there or thereabouts are really good sides,” Dalglish said on the club’s official website.

“I know two of them got put out of the Champions League but there are still really good sides up there.

“It’s going to be tough but we’ll have a good go at it and see where it takes us. We just need to keep playing as well as we have done and get that wee bit of extra luck.

“It is only slight but then again some of the smallest steps are the biggest ones to take.

“We believe we are doing things the right way so we’ll continue to do that because we don’t know any other way.”

The 60-year-old also went on to insist that his side have yet to have the rub of the green this season after falling victim to some poor refereeing decisions.

“I think we have played well enough for people to judge for themselves whether we have the quality,” he continued.

“We have certainly deserved more points than we have got but we are still progressing.

“We’ve been delighted with what we have done and we would love to progress into the top four.”

Liverpool have accumulated 25 points from 15 games and lie in seventh place as they prepare to take on Aston Villa in Birmingham on Sunday.
