Dorcus Inzikuru’s winning touch has not completely eluded her. At least, she can compete regionally. The 2005 world steeplechase champion on Sunday held off two fiercely charging Kenyans to win the MTN Kampala marathon 21km subsidiary race.
After neck-and-neck battles in the bigger part of the race, Inzikuru escaped from the Kenyan duo of Rionotukel Chemutai and Lillian Chelimo to defend her title in one hour, 19 minutes and 18 seconds. Her effort earned her a Shs4.5m cash prize. Chemutai posted 1:19.23 to edge Chelimo (1:19.45) to third. “The many hills and corners made it hard to concentrate but I kept working hard,” said a happy Inzikuru, pulling off a few strokes to Dr. Hilderman’s Mukama Mulungi track.
The Arua gazelle revealed she would invest her cash prize in preparing for next year’s Olympics.
In the men’s category, Kenya’s Onesmus Kokoech Serem was fastest at 1:05.07. Rwanda’s Robert Kajuga (1:05.20) was second while Ugandan Jackson Kiprop (1:05.23) finished third.
