    INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

Johannesburg – Five people have been killed and 15 others injured in two separate accidents on the N1 highway in Johannesburg, paramedics said on Sunday.

A bakkie and a car collided on the N1 near the N2 split on Saturday night, spokesman Jeff Wicks said.

The driver of the bakkie was trying to make a U-turn when the car collided with it, he said. The driver of the bakkie and two occupants of the car died on the scene.

In another accident near the Grasmere toll plaza on the same night, two men were killed when a minibus taxi they were travelling in overturned.

“It seems the driver lost control of the vehicle after a rear tyre burst,” Wicks said.

“The minibus overturned repeatedly and flung two men out before it rested in the centre reservation.” They both died on the scene.

Fifteen injured occupants, three of them seriously, were taken to various local hospitals. – Sapa
