PLATFORM FOR DEBATING ISSUES CONCERNING CONSTITUENCIES IN ANLO

As we gallop towards the 2012 general election, a process which is of most concern to all Anlo, both home and abroad, Anlo Youth Council (AYC) in collaboration with Platform for Citizens Dialogue (PLACID) wishes to request from all political parties fielding candidates for the contest of a parliamentary seat in any of the constituencies in Anlo, viz. Anlo, Ketu South, Ketu North, Ave Avenor, South Tongu and North Tongu to submit a list of their candidates and their official contacts.

For the NDC in any of the constituencies in the Anlo Traditional Area, it is obvious that the winner of its primary is more than likely to win the parliamentary seat. The implication is that beyond the primaries in the Anlo Traditional Area, the citizens do not have the opportunity to test the candidate’s potentials and programmes against other candidates (NPP, CPP, and the others) and their alternatives.

To prevent this sort of situation, we wish to urge all the candidates of the political parties (NDC candidates for the primaries, NPP candidate (s), CPP candidate (s) etc.) to avail themselves of the general platform created for debate by the Platform for Citizens Dialogue (PLACID) to contest their ideas and programmes in a public debate, where citizens will have the opportunity to question, challenge, and test the capabilities and the veracity of candidate’s propositions.

PLACID is a culmination of the quest of Ghanaians for a deepening of the democratic process beyond the partisan to the bare issues of bread and butter, and health, which directly confront our people and for which there appears not to be a solution worth the effort of electing parliamentarians every four years.

The platform is an initiative of great concern, not only to discerning and well intentioned Ghanaians living all over the globe, but also to Anlo Youth Council (AYC), a non-partisan advocacy-led organization spearheading the renewal of faith in the development of this part of our nation, Volta Region and ultimately Ghana.

We expect a response to this initiative to reach AYC by January 5, 2012. Responses are preferred by e-mail at [email protected]

Thank you very much for your attention and we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
