Passy Mubalama, Goma
14 December 2011
At least 5 protestors were arrested on Tuesday by police forces during a protest in Goma, in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Tear gas was fired at a crowd in Goma on Tuesday as they protested against the results of the presidential elections on the 28 November, 2011 in which Joseph Kabila was elected as the new president of the DRC.
The police rapidly intervened, arresting three members of the UDPS (Union for Democracy and Social Progress of Ethienne Tshisekedi) and two supporters of the UNC (Union for the Congolese Nation). These two organisations are opposition parties.
The other people arrested included Rubens Mikindo, president of the UDPS in Northern-Kivu as well as Alex Bauma, president of the UNC in Goma.
While the members of the UDPS state that they received permission from the mayor of Goma for the protest to go ahead, the mayor denies ever agreeing to this.
