It’s distressing that the local rugby leagues failed to start fully for the second week, with only few matches being played.
Top clubs in the Kenya Cup are resisting the move by the Kenya Rugby Union to expand the league to Nyanza and Western Kenya so as to spur development.
Although they have produced some of Kenya’s finest players, these regions still lack representation at the top.
Few players from the regions have pursued the game in Nairobi while talent ends up going to waste for lack of opportunity.
Clubs argue that the move to have 12 teams in the Kenya Cup will water down competition and that relegation and promotion rules will lack meaning.
But to say the least, the proposal for the expansion didn’t come with the election of Mwangi Muthee as chairman.
What was lacking was the will to do so. It’s needless to continue embracing policies that have over the years led to the game’s stagnation.
Rules and regulations ought to be followed, but the clubs need to embrace affirmative action.
Personal differences should not be allowed to spoil the gains now that there is increased sponsorship. Expand the Kenya Cup.
