Residents of Nkawie zongo, last Thursday, said no longer will the people of the country’s Zongos fall for the old propaganda that a government of the New Patriotic Party would deport people back to their countries of origin.

They said this when they declared their intention to support Nana Akufo-Addo, the 2012 Presidential Candidate of the NPP in the upcoming general elections.

The group, called ‘New Members of NPP’, was excited to see Nana Addo in their community and heralded his arrival with drumming, singing and dancing.

The leader of the group, Awudu, who spoke on their behalf, expressed their delight to have Nana Addo in their community adding “we have decided to join the NPP because the NDC is not helping us and we think they cannot help us.”

He confessed “during elections, the NDC would come around to tell us that if the NPP won power, they would sack us from Ghana and so we should vote for the NDC and we also obliged.”

He went to give the reasons why that can no longer work today.

“Kufuor was President for eight years and not a single person in any zongo community in any part of Ghana was sacked from the country. Indeed we felt safer under the NPP.”

Awudu went on to say with a tone of sadness, “Now, we have realised that the NDC is only lying to us and will continue to do so if we allow it.”

Aside that, he said, “is the harsh economic realities of today. During the days of President Kufuor and the NPP, life was much better than it is today. What saddens us more is that the government has opted to simply turn a blind eye to our problems.”

With the NPP flagbearer listening, Awudu added, “We have complained about our gutters which are poorly drained, causing stench in the community, and posing a health hazard. Our schools are not in good shape and all the social interventions that the NPP introduced, particularly National Health Insurance Scheme, National Youth Employment Programme and School Feeding Programme, have all collapsed under the NDC administration” he said.

They have thus decided to work hard for Nana Addo to ensure victory for the NPP in 2012.

The NPP flagbearer, who was on a tour of the Atwima Nwabiagya constituency, thanked them for the show of love and support, and their decision to join the NPP fold adding “you have finally come to the party that can move our country forward.”

He urged them to work closely with the constituency executives of the party to ensure that the party wins the votes of the great majority of the Ghanaian people in 2012.

Nana Akufo-Addo has concluded the first phase of his listening tour of the Ashanti Region after successful tours of the Eastern and Central regions.

Nana Addo, who is accompanied on the tour by his Campaign Manager, Mr. Boakye Agyarko, Director of Operation, Lord Commey and his Press Secretary, Herbert Krapa, has so far been impressed with the love and support shown him in all three regions he has been to so far and says he is encouraged by that to take the listening campaign to every little corner of Ghana.
