Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he needs to strengthen his squad before the start of the new Premier League season.

Gunners fans have been bracing themselves for the departure of club captain Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, and have also seen Gael Clichy leave for Manchester City.

So far the Frenchman has secured the signigns of young centre-back Carl Jenkinson and forward gervinho, and admitted he wants to add more to his squad.

After watching his side’s Emirates Cup draw with the New York Red Bulls, who fielded Gunners legend Thierry Henry, Wenger told reporters: “We will try to strengthen the squad but I have no names to offer today.”

But there may not be any strengthening in defence a the Frenchman appeared happy with centre-back pairing Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny against the American opposition.

“I felt the two centre backs were very good, in my opinion, and played very well. If you look at the goal we conceded today, i don’t think it comes from the centre backs,” he said.

“I am very happy with the two days. We were tested and for both days we played well for an hour.”

He added:  “I don’t think you can compare friendly games. We weren’t playing in the championship where you have to win games. It’s not the same.

“They did very well but when you go into your championships and you are expected to make the game, to take the initiative, it becomes a different game.”

With Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Manchester United and Manchester City both spending big this summer so far, Wenger admitted his club aren’t able to compete with the financial muscle of some.

“They have huge resources, we know that,” he added. “We know we have to compete with people who have more resources than us, I’ve spoken 50 times about that. But I cannot change that.”
