THE leader of a three-man gang that killed a police constable Olusegun Olufowobi at Ado Ekiti on July 20 this year, Blessing Onwurhisi, has  recalled how he perpetrated the devilish act during a robbery .

Onwurhisi who was paraded at the Ekiti State Police Command said it was the deceased that first shot at him before he retaliated with the only bullet in his gun.

According to him, “We did not know that he was a policeman when we gained entry into his house when his wife opened the gate. He shot me in the chest and while I was down I submit (retaliated) and he also fell.”

Onwurhisi, 27, who hails from Delta State, disclosed that he took into robbery to complete his education at Federal Polytechnic , Ado Ekiti, where he was studying science laboratory technology before his arrest.

The suspect, was arrested alongside a 400-level medical student of Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State, Kolade Olajide and a vulcaniser, Ojo Ogundare from Ipole Iloro Ekiti for robbery and murder of the police officer at his residence in Ajebamidele Area of Ado Ekiti .

The suspect, who was shot by the dead policeman had been receiving medical attention at the Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife in Osun State before police detectives swooped on him.

Onwurhisi, who said he learnt how to shoot as a hunter regretted taking to armed robbery and advised  youths to steer clear of robbery, saying it was sinful and unprofitable.

“I know the chances of surviving are slim but if I come to this world again, I will never even be a hunter let alone become an armed robber. I know I have committed a grievous offence and I will say the truth, because the game is up,” he said.

Onwurhisi pointed out that he had robbed in five places alongside Kolade before he killed the policeman, adding that the policeman happened to be the first victim he would kill since he started robbery about two and half months ago.

He disclosed that the gang bought the gun for N40,000 through Kolade with the only cartridge they had been using to harass their victims , which he said he fired to kill the police officer.

He said further that Kolade advised him to quit his hunting business and take robbery, so that he could live a good life and complete his diploma course at the polytechnic.

The suspect exonerated the only female suspect among them, Faleye Sunkanmi of complicity in the robbery, saying she was his girlfriend and never knew that he was an armed robber.

Buttressing the earlier statement made by Sunkanmi,  Onwurhisi  said the lady was running errands for him at OAUTH, having been deceived that he had an accident when he was arrested by the police.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Police Command, Mr Jimoh Mohammed , said that the suspects would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigations into the matter.

Jimoh, Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the police would visit their institutions and their home states to be able to unravel enough evidence to prosecute the suspects.
