The general secretary of the Namibia Financial Institutions Union (Nafinu), Asnath Zamuee, has demanded that the appointment of Alfred Angula to the deputy secretary general position of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) be reversed.

In a letter to the president of NUNW Elia Manga, Zamuee said such an appointment would be unconstitutional.

According to the constitution of the NUNW, the appointment would have to be made through an election at the national congress on nomination and with no less than one-third of the affiliates in good standing voting.

Zamuee maintained that a ballot conducted to appoint Angula was not free and fair because only three out of nine unions participated in the voting.

She said common practice dictates that there should be an independent person in charge of the election process, which was not the case.

Zamuee charged that Manga dictated the process at the special Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting held earlier this month.

She said a previous CEC meeting decided that only those unions in good standing – those that have paid up their NUNW membership fees – should be entitled to vote.

NUNW secretary general Evilastus Kaaronda earlier said that few unions have paid their dues, describing non-payment as a chronic problem.

Zamuee charged that Manga had evicted protesting workers from the CEC meeting because they could not be part of the meeting, while he allowed associate members – Minister Peter Ilonga and National Assembly Deputy Speaker Loide Kasingo – to be part of the meeting.

Nafinu wants a response from Manga within one week.
