Carlos Salcido and Clint Dempsey are both set to miss Fulham’s opening Europa League qualifier on Thursday as they welcome Faroe Islanders NSI Runavik to Craven Cottag, according to reports.
The two players have been given an extended holiday following their efforts in the recent Concacaf Gold Cup, reports the Fulham Chronicle, but it is unclear if the two will be available for the second leg on July 7.
Salcido will undoubtedly be in good spirits as he helped form the Mexico defence that eventually won the tournament, beating Dempsey’s USA in the final 4-2.
On the way to the final, Salcido and the rest of his defensive unit only conceded once, and despite going two behind early on in the final, a brace from West Ham’s Pablo Barrera helped inspire an exciting comeback.
Ahead of Martin Jol’s first game in charge, the Cottagers have received some positive news on the injury front with Bobby Zamora likely to take a place on the bench and could start the away leg.
Fulham’s opponents finished third in the Faroe Islands Premier League last season and will be motivated to show what they can do against their more glamorous counterparts.
Their first ever participation in European competition came in 2003 as they attempted to qualify for the Uefa Cup groupstages.
For Fulham’s away leg, the match will be played in Torshavn rather than Runavik as NSI’s stadium does not meet Uefa safety regulation.
