Some two factions in the NDC in the Gomoa East Constituency in the Central region clashed this morning when one of the groups was demonstrating against the disappearance of GH¢3.8bn from the coffers of the Assembly.
According to ASEDA FM’s Nana Koomson who reported the incident to ASEMPA NEWS, police had to use tear gas as well as warning shots to disperse one of the groups which had gone to counter the demonstration against the Assembly by the other faction.
The Spokesperson for the protesting group, Adam Seidu presented a petition to the MP for Gomoa East, Ekow Panin Okyere. Part of the petition is demanding that President Mills, who is deemed to be anti-corrupt set up a committee to investigate the theft or embezzlement.
Mr Ekow Panin Okyere promised to send a copy to the Office of the President and the NDC headquarters so that the matter is given the needed attention.
The DCE of Gomoa East, Isaac Kingsley Ahunumah told Asempa Today that, some suspects including seven of the Assembly’s staff are already facing trial and have been granted bail by the Cape Coast High Court. According to Mr. Kingsley Ahunumah, the amount of money stolen is ¢3.87bn adding that it was detected on 28th April, 2011.
Mr. Ahunumah says he suspects that some NPP faithful who want his removal from office are behind this morning’s demonstration, explaining that they beat the ‘gong gong’ to incite people to participate in the demonstration because they alleged he (DCE) had spent the money.
When asked if he has informed the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo about the missing money, he responded in the negative but added he had informed the Central regional Minister Ama Benyiwa Doe.
