Windhoek — Mozambicans resident in Namibia are ambassadors for their country, declared President Armando Guebuza on Thursday night, at a meeting with the Mozambican community in Windhoek.
“We have Mozambicans here who know Namibia and know their own country”, he said. “This is an opportunity for us to urge our fellow-countrymen to do something for more solid economic links, by attracting investment, and finding ways of exploiting many things that may exist here and which we are not duly exploiting”.
Speaking to about 20 Mozambicans living in Namibia, Guebuza called on them to use their initiative to create greater positive economic interdependence between the two countries.
He also spoke of the difficulties affecting Mozambique, including the high prices of fuel on the world market, exacerbated by instability in north Africa and the Middle East. But he blamed the crisis, not simply on the producer countries, but on speculation by middlemen.
“The problem of fuel is not just a problem of the producers, but also of the intermediaries, who are speculators making use of the environment to feed more crises, so that they can make a bit more money”, accused Guebuza. “For us, that means more crises in our countries”.
The President said that to date Mozambique and Namibia have prioritised their political cooperation – but there were economic areas “where we can do much more. One are that is relatively advanced is that of fisheries, where there are already agreements, and both countries have worked together, but there is still space for us to do more”.
“I want you to be our ambassadors”, said Guebuza. “If you have ideas which can be used to create interdependence in the economic area, and in arts and culture, we are open, and we count on your contributions”.
