Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has urged residents to conduct themselves peacefully as the first round of elections begin tomorrow with the National Assembly polls.
He urged the people to vote for candidates of their choice.
In a broadcast yesterday, Fayemi said: “The 2011 elections are important to us in Ekiti State for additional reasons. Events surrounding the 2007 elections portrayed Ekiti as a politically-volatile state; associated with violence, political mischief, criminality, brigandage and other untoward activities.
” Let us reflect on the circumstances that led to the debacle of 2007 and say no to those who do not want the views of the majority to prevail.
“Let us say no to those who want Ekiti State to remain in the backwaters of Nigeria.
“Let us say no to those who want to make our land of honour a land of horror.
“Our land has always been ile iyi, ile eye, a place where integrity and good name are worth more than all the riches in the world.
“As from tomorrow, please go to the polling stations as Omoluabi (men and women of character).
“Please act in accordance with the rules; do not seek to disrupt the electoral process. Vote for candidates of your choice.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that our votes will count this time.
“On your part, remember that eternal vigilance is the price to pay for our liberty.”
Igbos in Ekiti State, under the aegis of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, have pledged their support for Fayemi.
President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nathaniel Uzorma spoke yesterday at the Government House, Ado-Ekiti, when Fayemi handed over 100 Suzuki cars and 40 Nissan buses to transport unions.
Fayemi urged the union leaders to ensure that the loans on the vehicles were repaid.
He said any default would be sanctioned.
Fayemi said his administration partnered the Urban Development Bank on the Federal Mass Transit Scheme to improve transportation in the state.
He thanked the Igbos for their contributions to commerce and said he is considering appointing Igbos to positions of governance.
Uzorma said: “Igbos are in support of your government. We know you have our interest at heart and we say more grease to your elbow.”
