Fabio Capello has hailed Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere as the top young player in the world, stating that he has never seen a player so young command the pitch with such confidence.

Wilshere, who has seen his stock rise at a meteoric rate for the Gunners this season, looks set to start for the Three Lions against Wales on Saturday, as England look to maintain their good start to Euro 2012 qualification.

The youngster has two caps for the national team, having made his debut against Hungary in August. Wilshere then delivered a man of the match performance against Denmark last month, announcing himself on the international stage.

When asked whether the Arsenal midfielder is now set to be a first-team player for the national side, Capello replied: “Yes, yes, because he is good, because he plays without fear, and with confidence.

“Also for someone so young, he is a leader. It is incredible. I never saw someone so young be a leader on the pitch. It is incredible.

“Wilshere, after the game against Barcelona, he has arrived. He has arrived. You can understand the value of that sort of performance. As a young player, I think he is at the top, not only in England but Europe and the world.”

The Italian coach also admitted that he had considered a call-up for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, but said that Sir Alex Ferguson insists that he needs more games under his belt.

He said: “Smalling is a very interesting player. I am monitoring him. I spoke with Sir Alex and he told me he needs more games, more experience but I think, when you play Champions League games, it is really important.”

Capello acknowledged that some of his biggest stars are set to miss out through injury but hopes that no more knocks will occur in the build-up to the clash with Wales at the Millenium Stadium.

He added: “We will have no Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard and Theo Walcott through injury and I hope that only those three players will not be fit.

“The squad will be 25 players for these two games. Two players more than normal.”
